This chapter analyses the advice that Henry Addison (1805-76) provides the readers of his two advice manuals for prospective 19th-century British expatriates on the continent on the issues of identity and Englishness. Light is shed on who functioned as the most important “other” in the process of identity construction of the expats and on the question whether the expats, once abroad, abandoned their Englishness/Britishness or in fact enhanced it
